Youth out of Cup after hard-fought local derby

On Saturday afternoon the Youth XV welcomed Cefneithin RFC to Parc y Mynydd Mawr for the third match between the two local rivals this season, this time in the West Wales Youth Cup. The Magpies had emerged victorious in the previous two hard fought encounters with little to separate two evenly matched teams and Saturday’s game followed the same pattern. Cefen took an early 6-point lead with a couple of penalty kicks but in truth there was nothing much to separate the two teams early on. Two key moments would stack the odds against the Magpies getting their third win of the season against the Green and Golds. Firstly, young Tumble playmaker Kieran Jones had to leave the field with a suspected concussion after mistiming a tackle to bring down former Magpies centre Cameron Collins. Jones’ departure from the field saw his older brother Alex being brought off the bench after a period out injured. Unfortunately the second key moment saw Alex Jones’ game not lasting long as an ill-timed tackle saw the referee, somewhat harshly produce the red card and send him from the field of play minutes after being introduced.

With the Magpies now down to 14 players the whole backline needed to be reorganised and this definitely had an effect on Tumble’s defensive game.  Despite the numerical disadvantage the Tumble pack and backline put pressure on their opponents throughout the game scoring a try to bring the score back to 5-6. Two Cefneithin tries saw them utilise numerical advantage and establish a 5-18 lead before the Magpies brought it back to 12-18 with a converted try of their own. Late on in the game Cefen scored another try to secure a 12-23 win and passage into the next round of the cup.

Hats off to the boys who played the majority of the game a man down and but for the bounce of the ball and a few loose passes could still have clinched the win. Well done to Cefneithin and best of luck in the next round.

Man of the Man goes to flanker Dafydd Griffiths who never missed a tackle and led by example throughout the game.

Coaches Word: Win together, lose together and stay together.

Finally, all at the club wish Kieran Jones a speedy recovery from his injury.
