Youth bow out of Plate at Pembroke

The Youth XV made the long trip west to Pembroke RFC on Saturday afternoon to take on the 'Scarlets' in the second round of the WRU National Youth Plate. Weakend slightly with a number of players unavailable de to work commitments and injury the young Magpies, led by stand-in captain Morgan Davies knew that they were going to be in for a game against a strong Pembroke outfit that are doing well in the Scarlets Pembrokeshire Youth League. Pembroke elected to start the game with passive scrums, due to not having a recognised front row and in truth this took away the set-piece dominance that the Magpies had been showing in recent games. Without the need to concentrate on the scrum Pembroke were able to focus all their efforts on quick and hard running back play. Pembroke's backs were running strong, straight and hard at a Tumble defence from the kick-ff and the Magpies were found wanting, going into the break 31-0 down.

At the break the boys were faced with a choice, lay down and allow the opposition run up a cricket score or show the determination and attitude that has seem them put in some impressive performances over the last few weeks. Fortunately the boys chose the later. Despite playing 50 minutes of the game with 14 players, including what looked like a harsh yellow card the second half saw the boys group together and put their bodies on the line to prevent further Pembroke attacks gaining yardage. Unfortunately progression in the plate was not ment to be but all the boys got stuck in and the effort second half couldn't be faulted. Final score was 36-5 to the home side with the Magpies scoring a try from loose head prop Rhys Tobias, his first for the team.

Special mention for the following: Taylor Stone - making his first start for the team he put in a great shift with some telling defensive work. for his first youth start; Liam Jones - playing his first game for the Youth he contributed well throughout and Osian Flint - who stepped up to the plate as acting pack leader and took the responsibility in his stride. Tumble Man of the Match had to be split between Osian Edwards and Alex Jones who both showed great leadership and passion to the rest of the team..

Coaches' Viewpoint: Keep together and it WILL happen.
