Mumbles take a Tumble at Parc y Mynydd Mawr

The Magpies winning streak continues after the 1st XV put in a magnificent shift to defeat in-form Mumbles RFC and claim their fourth win from five games. Mumbles arrived at Parc y Mynydd Mawr high in confidence after defeating table-topping Hendy RFC last weekend but encountered a Tumble side that was a match for them in all facets of the game. The Oystermen from Swansea took an early lead after three minutes when they crossed for an unconverted try but the Magpies were back on level terms after quarter of an hour when pacy full back Scott Jones was put over in the corner following a well worked move. Tumble were guilty of trying to play in the wrong area of the field following the kick-off and surrendered possession to Mumbles, who scored their second try wide-out only three minutes after the Magpies had taken the lead. The conversion was again missed to leave the score 5-10 to the visitors. Tumble were now stringing some fine moves together in difficult conditions and were an even match for the higher placed opponents. After 27 minutes they were back in the lead when hooker Rhys Lewis was driven over following some outstanding forwards play near the Mumbles try line. Captain and outside half Steve Hewitt stepped up to slot over the conversion and give Tumble a 12-10 lead. The Magpies were again guilt of surrendering possession in their own half almost immediately from the restart which ultimately resulted in Mumbles crossing for their third try of the game after 32 minutes. The conversion was missed leaving the score 12-15 to the visitors and it remained that way until the interval.

Within three minutes of the restart Tumble found themselves down to 14 players when influential flanker and vice-captain Steffan Owen was sent to the sin-bin. Mumbles could not make their numerical advantage pay however and conceded another Magpies try when they had an extra man on the field. Good interplay and handling saw Hewitt weave his way through would be tacklers to score near the posts. He then picked himself up from the Parc y Mynydd Mawr mud to add the extras, 19-15 to the Magpies. The remainder of the game saw both teams have opportunities to score, with Hewitt pulling two penalty attempts narrowly wide. After nine minutes of injury time, after a head injury to one of the Mumbles back row players the referee finally blew his whistle to signal the end of the game, the win and another four points gained. Da iawn bois!
