Magpies downed against title-hunting Borderers

The Magpies welcomed title-hunting Whitland RFC to Parc y Mynydd Mawr for the first time since 1996 and could not prevent the already promoted Borderers picking up a bonus point win, 14-52. Whilst the score looks heavily one-sided there were many positives to come out of this game for the young Tumble side. Firstly the home side had the better of their high flying opponents in the scrum and the commitment shown by each player could not be faulted. Some slack play early on in the game allowed Whitland to build-up a commanding 0-28 lead before the referee awarded a penalty try to the Magpies, bringing the score back to 7-28. Whitland then scored another try to extend their lead to 7-33. The last 10 minutes of the first half was all Tumble as they put concerted pressure on the Whitland line before second row Nathan Willard powered his way over from close range for a well deserved try. Captain and outside half Steven Hewitt stepped up to slot over the conversion and make the score 14-33, which is how it remained until the half time interval.

The second half saw the Magpies compete with their high-flying opponents especially when it came to scrum time but they were unable to convert possession into scoring opportunities. When in possession Whitland looked dangerous especially with their pacey outside backs and the Borderers were able to cross the Tumble whitewash for three tries in the second-half, two of which were converted to complete the scoring,14-52.
