A superb final ten minutes from the Magpies saw them clinch a victory which even 10 minutes earlier had seemed unlikely. The pattern for the match was established in the first half with Tumble dominant in the set piece but struggling to deal with the open play of Mumbles. A try by number 8 Steffan Davies and a conversion plus penalty from outside half Steven Hewitt saw Tumble go into the break 13-20 down.

The second half continued in much the same vein as the first with the Magpies unable to create much of a try scoring threat and when Mumbles scored their third try to make the score 13-25 Tumble appeared dead and buried. At this point the home side could have given up but a rousing team talk from captain Hefin Dumbrill saw the Magpies reinvigorated and replacement flanker Darren Williams crashed over for a try converted by Hewitt. Blindside Owain Davies was also not awarded what looked like a perfectly good try by the referee who was unsighted on the wrong side of the ruck. At this point constant infringements by Mumbles saw them awarded two yellow cards. Tumble’s forwards continued to dominate and flanker Steffan Owen was driven over wide out, however the referee had spotted another infringement and was already heading under the posts to award the penalty try. The score was now tied at 25 all with Hewitt stepping up to add the extras and put the Magpies 27-25 up with 48 minutes on the clock. A couple of scrums later the ball was booted off the park for Tumble to secure a gutsy win. Da iawn bois!
